Isbell is in full command
Jason Isbell and his band, The 400 Unit, are at the peak of their powers after touring for nearly two years on Isbell's most recent (and best) album, Southeastern. You can tell that despite playing these songs so many times, they still love playing them, and love playing together. Isbell himself was in fine voice on this night, putting everything into his lyrics. They played all but one of the songs on Southeastern (I was sad not to hear "The Songs She Sang In The Shower"), and the rest of the setlist consisted of four songs from Isbell's days with Drive-By Truckers, four from Southeastern's predecessor, Here We Rest, and a single track from Isbell's debut, Sirens Of The Ditch. Sadly overlooked was Isbell's underrated second album Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, but even with that omission, the setlist couldn't possibly have disappointed. Isbell has a deep enough catalog already that there are at least a dozen songs that audiences eagerly anticipate at each show.
Personally, I think Jason Isbell could be the best songwriter of his generation, and his writing talent is matched by his singing and playing. This guy's the real deal, and he has a top-notch band, and this is simply not a show you should miss.
